The Advanced Technology Environmental Energy Center (ATEEC) is a national center that supports environmental and energy technology education to address the needs of the national and global workforce. As a National Science Foundation Center of Excellence, ATEEC provides curriculum development, professional development, and program improvement in the nation's community colleges and secondary schools. The ATEEC Interactive Learning Lab is a resource for local youth and educators who have the opportunity to learn from a variety of different hands-on displays on energy, renewables, and environmental topics. The Lab also offers programming that can be provided onsite at area schools. Through the Carver Lending Library, educators also have access to a multitude of hands-on science kits and curricula to use in their own classrooms.

Nahant Marsh Education Center

Nahant Marsh is a 265-acre preserve nestled in southwest Davenport. It is part of a 513-acre wetland complex along the Mississippi River. The marsh is home to over 150 species of birds, 400 species of plants, and a wide variety of mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects, including several rare and endangered species. Nahant provides a variety of experiences: trails, dock, viewing platforms, bird blind, wet prairie meadow, mesic prairie, sand prairie, open water habitat, floodplain forest and vernal ponds. Nahant Marsh is a great place to explore wildlife and learn about the flora that once covered much of the landscape in Iowa. Visitors can enjoy bird watching, nature photography, hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and picnicking, or participate in a variety of environmental education experiences available at the center. Niabi Zoo offers an opportunity to explore 40 acres of a 287-acre forest preserve while enjoying the countryside of Rock Island County. This exploration guides guests through the discovery of more than 600 animals representing over 200 biologically diverse species. With its dynamic education programs and unique guest experiences, the Zoo also provides superb animal care for 25 species that are endangered, vulnerable and threatened with extinction. Nicolina is a young lady on a mission to save turtles and other animals from the harmful effects of plastic waste. One million seabirds and one hundred thousand marine animals die each year due to plastic entanglement and ingestion. Nicolina’s Turtle Company works to reduce plastic use by getting people to skip plastic straws. Nicolina sews and sells colorful straw pockets as a fun way to encourage people to utilize re-usable straws while earning money to donate to conservation efforts. Nicolina’s Turtle Company has donated to Niabi Zoo, Nahant Marsh, QC Botanical Center, and Living Lands and Waters to adopt turtles, start a scholarship fund to help children attend Zoo Camp, lead local clean-up efforts, and create ARTivism (Activism through Art) projects to inspire change.

In 1990, 1993 & 1995 severe flooding occurred on Scott County urban streams. This flooding was a result of the conventional methods being used to deal with stormwater. These events and concerns with water quality in Scott County streams led to the formation of the Partners of Scott County Watersheds, an alliance committed to developing and implementing ways all citizens can be better stewards of our watersheds.
Since then, the group has been improving water quality in Scott County by providing residents, landowners, developers, environmental organizations, educators, and government officials with education, technical support, volunteer opportunities, and financial assistance to promote and install best management practices. Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) is an Illinois statewide educational program. Its goal is to help educators, students and the general population gain a greater awareness of the importance of agriculture in their daily lives. The Rock Island County AITC program uses agriculture as a medium to teach social studies, language arts, math and science. By using agricultural products and animals that are familiar to children, new information and ideas are more meaningful to students and easier to understand. The local agricultural literacy program meets the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards and consists of: classroom programs for students (K-12), in-services/workshops for educators, many free-loan resources for schools, public awareness, and networking to strengthen efforts statewide and nationally.

Soil and Water Conservation Districts were established under the Illinois Soil and Water Conservation District Act in 1937, and although SWCD is a governmental body, it is not a branch of federal, state, or county government. RICWMA is a partnership between 13 local governments that coordinates countywide waste division and recycling efforts. The Wapsi River Environmental Education Center is located along the Wapsipinicon River and consists of 225 acres of upland and bottomland forests, grasslands, and wetlands. The Wapsi Center, along with Sherman Park across the river, provide a 432-acre complex with goals including protection of existing natural resources, managing diverse wildlife habitat, providing a comprehensive environmental education program, outdoor recreation opportunities and public access to the Wapsipinicon River. The Waste Commission of Scott County provides environmentally and fiscally sound solutions for solid waste management in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. The Commission owns and operates the Scott Area Landfill, Scott Area Recycling Center, Household Hazardous Material Facilities and Electronic Demanufacturing Facility.
